Update on Xarelto Lawsuits and Injury Claims
Lawsuits against Bayer and Janssen Pharmaceuticals alleging injuries and serious side effects after taking the blood thinner Xarelto. Approximately 18,500 lawsuits have been filed as of January 2018 alleging various causes of action regarding Xarelto, including failure to warn patients and doctors of fatal internal bleeding, inability to stop bleeding, and increased risk of strokes, hemorrhages, and blood clots.
Some of the first Xarelto lawsuits to be tried were lost; however, a Pennsylvania state court trial in November 2017 resulted in a jury verdict for the plaintiff. The jury awarded the plaintiff in that case $24.2 million in punitive damages and $1.8 million in compensatory damages. The obvious takeaway is that the tide might be turning in favor of victims who have been injured after taking Xarelto.
Side Effects Associated with Xarelto
The FDA approved the blood thinner in 2011 to be prescribed in a uniform dose. The FDA approved the drug to be used for reducing DVT, blood clots, and PE after knee or hip surgery. A few months later, the drug was approved for the prevention of systemic embolism and stroke in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation. In November 2012, Xarelto was approved to treat PE and DVT long-term. The oral tablets are available in 10 mg, 15 mg, and 20 mg doses.
Common side effects associated with taking blood thinners include:
- Back pain
- Rectum bleeding
- Tingling or numb muscles
- Weakness in the legs
- Abnormal liver function
- Difficulty swallowing
- Dysfunction of the bladder or bowels
- Reduced platelet levels
- Difficulty breathing
Patients experiencing these side effects should discuss the side effects with their physician. While the above side effects, when monitored, may not cause serious injury, other side effects associated severe bleeding should not be ignored. Immediate hospitalization and medical intervention may be needed to prevent severe injury or life-threatening conditions. If you experience any of the following symptoms, you need to seek immediate medical attention:
- Coughing up blood clots or blood
- Unusual bleeding gums
- Black or bright stool
- Urine that is brown, red, or pink

In addition to the above warning signs, there could be other dangerous side effects associated with taking Xarelto. If you experience any unexplained symptoms or the symptoms that your doctor has discussed with you continue or worsen, you should seek medical attention.
