Does Roundup Weed-Killer Cause Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma Cancer?

If I use the common weed killer Roundup, could I really be at risk for non-Hodgkins lymphoma? That’s a question we often get asked in our free consultations regarding the popular weed-killer RoundUp. Many victims are not filing claims against, Monsanto, the manufacturer of Roundup, claiming they contracted non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma due to the product’s usage.

Now, California has acted against Monsanto. Per US News & World Report, California may soon require Roundup weed-killer sold in the state to include a warning about the product’s cancer risk.

Can Roundup Weed Killer Cause Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma?

Roundup is a weed and grass killing herbicide manufactured by Monsanto. Roundup is the second most used herbicide in homes and gardens in the US and the most popular herbicide used in agricultural sectors nationwide. As such, Roundup is used on approximately 80% of the farmland in our country, including wheat, canola, soybeans and corn. In addition, many of these crops are fed to animals, such as cows, chickens and pigs, which are later used to produce milk, slaughtered for meat, and used in the poultry industry. Therefore, Roundup is present within a large part of our food chain.

Roundup’s main ingredient is glyphosate. Back in the 1980’s many questions arose about the safety of glyphosate, triggering the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to issue a warning about cancer risks associated with glyphosate until more research becomes available. Then in 2001, a group of Canadian scientists discovered a connection between glyphosate and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. This type of cancer grows in the lymphocytes, which are the white blood cells that help our bodies fight disease.

In 2003, an American study published in Occupational and Environmental Medicine revealed data that showed that farmworkers exposed to glyphosate developed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma at an increased rate compared to the rest of society. As more and more studies find cancer risks associated with Glyphosate and Roundup, Monsanto has become the target of lawsuits. As of October 2017, approximately 37 lawsuits had been filed against the chemical company.
